A heat transfer system 10, particularly for use in a ventilating system (see Fig. 3) for transferring heat between intake air and exhaust air, comprises a plurality of transverse fins 14 mounted on and extending between spaced, parallel heat pipes 12. The fins are divided into two groups separated by a baffle 34. In use heat is transferred between intake air flowing over one group of fins and exhaust air flowing over the other group. The rate of heat transfer is directly proportional to the temperature differential between the intake and exhaust air. Each heat pipe includes a vaporizable-condensable working fluid 32 such as water, ammonia or methanol, and a porous capillary wick 26 contained in a tube 20 closed by end caps 22, 24. The heat pipes are supported in and extend between end members 16, 18. |
