The method involves detecting a defect of a particle filter (12) based on an estimation of a particle sensor signal. A remaining operation period of a particle sensor (13) is determined based on detection of the particle filter defect and slag toxication by a remaining operation period determining device (24). A correction signal is provided by the determining device to correct sensitivity loss of the particle sensor caused by the slag toxication.
