A fibrous sheet such as a paper coated with a water-soluble binder of polyvinyl alcohol is impregnated with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble carboxylate, so as to produce a water-disintegratable fibrous sheet. Salting out of the polyvinyl alcohol with the carboxylate maintains wet strength of the water-disintegratable fibrous sheet even in a wet state, which is easily disintegrated when immersed in a large amount of water after use. Furthermore, it does not suffer from deterioration in water-disintegratability and wet strength if it is left at high temperatures, and is good in water-disintegratability in cold water.
|
