In a process for reducing particulate oxicle-containing material in the whir l bed method, the oxide-containing material, by means of reducing gas flowing from bottom to top, is maintained in a whirl layer, thus being reduced. In order to avoid, or considerably reduce, operational interruptions of the reduction process caused by sticking or fouling, the clear tube speed of the reducing gas, exclusively above the whirl layer (24), is lowered over the total free cross section (31,32,33) of a space present above the whirl layer (24) continuously and under avoidance of whirl formations (Fig. 2).
