Lower aliphatic acids (isobutyric acid) are synthesised and isolated by (a) reacting CO with a 3-8C olefin (propylene) using a catalyst contg. H2SO4 (b) adding water (c) distilling the aliphatic acid and water at absolute pressure 300 mmHg and temp. 200 degrees C untl almost all of the acid has distilled and water content of the residue is 20 wt.% (d) repeating (a,b,c) using the residue from (c) as catalyst for (a). This residue contains 15-90 wt.% of a mixt. of hydroxyalkane sulphonic acid and its sulphuric acid ester, 0-75% H2SO4 and not >20% water. Costly purification of catalyst residue is not required in this process. |
