<p>Process for dyeing water swellable cellulosic materials.. Comprises contacting the cellulosic material in any sequence with (1) water sufficient to swell the cellulose (2) a dye, a boiling satd. soln. of which in 0.1 molar aqs. Na2CO3 shows an optical absorbence is not >30 and (3) a solvent in amt. sufficient to maintain swelling of water is removed and which (a) is not 2.5 wt.% soluble in H2O at 25 degrees C (b) boils above 150 degrees C at atmospheric pressure (c) is a solvent for the dye at 0-25 degrees C and (3) is of formula: where n is 0 or 1; m is positive integer; R is H, C1-8 alkyl, C7-15 aralkyl or alkaryl, R2CO-, R2SO2- or R2OCO- (where R2 is C1-8 alkyl, C5-10 cycloalkyl, C7-15 aralkyl or alkaryl, C6 aryl, C10aryl or furfuryl); R1 is OH, OR2, SR2, NHR2, NR2(C1-8 alkyl), NR2(C7-15 aralkyl or alkaryl), R2COO, R2O2SO-, R2OCOO, NH(phenyl) or NH (napthyl); x is member of unsatisfied valencies in A; and A is ROCH2CHORCH2-, -CH2CHORCH2-, -CH2CHCH2-, CH2C(CH2OR)3, (-CH2)2C(CH2OR)2, (-CH2)3C CH2OR, (-CH2)4C, -CH2(CHOR)yCH2OR, -CH2(CHOR)yCH2- or -CH2(CHOR)y-z (-CH)zCH2 (where y is 2,3 or 4 and z is 0,1,2,3, or 4 but = y). At same stage of the process the interior of the swollen cellulose must be contacted with a solution of the dye in aqs. solvent or solvent.</p> |
