An optical isolator is provided with a substrate, a waveguide layer which is lattice-matched with the substrate, and a nonreciprocal phase shifter. In the optical isolator, a waveguide and a bending waveguide are formed in the waveguide layer for guiding waves in the waveguide layer, and a branch coupler is arranged. The refractive index is made larger than 3.36 by changing the semiconductor composition of the waveguide layer.
