An automatic sewing machine is provided to set a center position of a fabric pressing device efficiently. A driving mean moves a fabric pressing device(20) to a fabric pressing point, ascending position, or middle position. A fabric pressing point setting mean sets a middle position of the fabric according to the sewing data. A height level information memory device stores the middle position height corresponding to the sewing data. A fabric pressing commanding device(6,7) orders the movement of the fabric pressing device to the fabric pressing position, the ascending position, or the middle position. A controller controls the movement of the fabric pressing device to the middle position height by the sewing data.
