<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer that holds firmware, performs processing according to the firmware, and can make a condition of updating the firmware to be adequate and useful more than that in a conventional one. <P>SOLUTION: This printer comprises a controller for issuing a print command by receiving a print request and an engine for performing printing according to the print command, and performs various controlling according to the held firmware. When the controller receives an updating request for the firmware, it moves the printer to be in a firmware updating mode which allows the printer not to accept the print request, but to provide status information indicative of a condition of each part of the engine in response to a providing request of the status information.
