PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that light emitted from a light projecting element of a light projecting/receiving element pair leaks to an imaging surface, etc., as to an optical apparatus equipped with two light projecting/receiving element pairs, at least, each comprising a light projecting element and a light receiving element, and an optical encoder of a scale longer than a space between the two element pairs, at least. SOLUTION: Position detection is performed by projecting light onto the scale from the light projecting element of one light projecting/receiving element pair confronting the scale out of the two light projecting/receiving element pairs, at least, while halting the light emission of the light projecting element of the other light projecting/receiving element pair not confronting the scale.
