<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight capable of being more thinned. <P>SOLUTION: A first electrode 22 is provided on a flexible substrate 21. A second electrode 23 is provided facing the first electrode 22. An organic thin film EL material 24 is interposed between the first electrode 22 and the second electrode 23. A polarizing plate 27 is provided so as to cover the second electrode 23 located at an output side of light from the organic thin film EL material 24.
