A fuelling machine as disclosed in Specification 1,260,682 has a head L provided with a snout P which may be coupled to the lower end of a selected fuel tube of a pressurized water reactor (Fig. 1, not shown) and the head may be rotated through 90 degrees about a horizontal axis to permit coupling of the snout to a horizontal fuel supply or disposal tube (Fig. 2, not shown). The space 115 within the head L and the interiors of the magazine tubes 121, 122 must be filled with water at a temperature and pressure similar to that existing in the reactor fuel tubes or in the horizontal supply and disposal tubes, before the snout valve 108 is opened. Since the water temperature and pressure in the horizontal tubes is much lower than the temperature and pressure in the reactor fuel tubes, the condition of the water in the fuelling machine must be changed when the snout P is transferred from a reactor feed tube to a horizontal tube and vice versa. It is desirable therefore that the volume of water in the fuelling machine be kept to a minimum and to this end the top plate 120 of the magazine 102 is sealed against the space 115 by a hydrostatic annular seal 116. Thus the water is confined to the space 115 and to the interiors of the tubes 121, 122 and is unable to reach the space surrounding the tube exteriors. The water conditions in the fuelling machine are changed by the arrangement shown in Fig. 10, the head L having two bores 360, 361 connected to pipes 362, 366. The water is circulated by a pump 363 through a heat exchanger 365 and a pre-set electrically controlled pressure regulator 368. Construction of seal 116.-The seal, Fig. 9, comprises a main seal 340 and a back-up seal 341. Seal 340 comprises a fixed seal body 342 and a seal body 343 rotatable with the magazine 102 and biased by a spring 344. When the magazine is to be indexed pressurized water is admitted to a conduit 347 to reach the cavity 345 and open the seal 340.</p>
