PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily produce an alkanediol of high purity at a high yield useful as a raw material for a medicine, an agricultural chemical, a liquid crystal and a polymer, and to produce an alkanediol of high optical purity without decreasing its optical purity when an optically active substance is used as a raw material. SOLUTION: Disclosed is a method for producing an alkanediol which comprises reducing an alkanediester by virtue of a metal hydride such as a hydrogenated bis(2-methoxyethoxy)aluminum-sodium, post-treating the resulting reaction solution with an aqueous solution of ammonium chloride, and subsequently treating the reaction mass with magnesium sulfate in the presence of 2-propanol.
