The motor vehicle air conditioning system, using carbon dioxide (CO2) as a coolant, has a fan with a motor (3a) to blow interior or exterior air into the vehicle interior. A CO2 sensor (10) registers the CO2 concentration within the air conditioning housing and/or the vehicle interior, to be determined if it breaches a reference value. The power supply to the sensor is resumed and the CO2 concentration assessment starts after a given time span from switching off the fan.
