<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection display device capable of exhibiting high brightness and contrast by inserting a wire grid polarizing plate between a light source and a polarization separation element to suppress shading. <P>SOLUTION: R, G, B light made incident on a reflection type spatial optical modulators 107, 113, 114 is polarized and modulated in response to each image signal and the light corresponding to a white signal in the image signals in the polarization direction is reflected by the wire grid polarizing plates 106, 111, 112 and light corresponding to a black signal in the polarization direction is transmitted. The contrast is improved by inserting wire grid polarizing plates 117, 118 between an illumination optics system and the wire grid polarizing plates 106, 111, 112 so as to tilt an angle between the optical axis of the illumination optics system and wire grid polarizing plates 117, 118 through ≥5° from right angle to prevent that the needless light remaining without being completely separated in the wire grid polarizing plates 106, 111, 112 is made incident again on the reflection type spatial optical modulators 107, 113, 114. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
