PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress ripples in output voltage in a matrix converter as a power converter that is inputted with three-phase alternating-current power and carries out PWM control by carrier comparison to obtain a three-phase alternating-current power of arbitrary amplitude and frequency. SOLUTION: In a phase close to where the magnitude relation among the instantaneous values of input three-phase voltages of a matrix converter changes, the matrix converter operates with an increased carrier frequency. This makes it possible to suppress ripples in output voltage produced by switching each time the phase of the supply voltage of the matrix converter is changed by 60°. Thus, suppressing ripples in the output voltage of the matrix converter can be achieved just by varying the frequency of a triangular-wave carrier without degradation in performance related to power supply characteristic or adding any component.
