<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect a laser element from static electricity and irregular voltage even when an optical pickup device is not being manufactured. <P>SOLUTION: The laser device is provided with a laser element and a protection part for protecting the laser element. The protection part is provided with a detector for detecting the predetermined voltage impressed to the laser device and a switch for short-circuiting the terminals of the laser element when the detected predetermined voltage value is within the predetermined range and canceling the short-circuit of the terminals when the detected voltage value is within the predetermined range.
