PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document reader that prevents tone gradations from being lost while avoiding show-through effect of an image on the back side of a document to the front side when the document having image areas on both the sides is read. SOLUTION: In the document reader 1, a controller 9 controls electronic paper 6 to reverse and present black and white, irradiates the document P with light in the state where the electronic paper 6 presents black and white to obtain reflected light, and controls a read unit 7 to read the document P in a state where the electronic paper 6 represents black. Further, the controller 9 calculates, as a first correction amount, the difference between the quantity of reflected light in a non-image area of the document P obtained in the state where the electronic paper 6 represents white, and the quantity of reflected light in the non-image area of the document P in a state where the electronic paper 6 represents black, and adds a second correction amount determined based upon the first correction quantity (d) according to the amount of reflected light to the amount of reflected light of the document P obtained in the state where the electronic paper represents black.
