The abrasion resistance of a hairy textile thread made from synthetic or natural fibres, esp. jute, is improved (by 50 - 300%) by applying a helical winding of a much finer thread which is relatively smooth and pref. heat shrinkable to form a uniform jacket which secures individual protruding core fibres which might otherwise be removed by abrasion. Pref. the winding is a monofilamnet, multifilament or (fibrillated) tape of a (cross-linked) linear polymer, pref. regenerated cellulose. Suitable thread winding device disclosed. Examples including covering 413 Tex jute thread with 34 strand Nylon (RTM) filaments of 7.8 tex, or with 60 tex split polyethylene tape.
|
