The present invention relates to compositions and methods for improving skeletal muscle protein metabolism through encouraging skeletal muscle protein synthesis, reducing skeletal muscle protein degradation, and attenuating inflammatory signalling in exercising muscle. The compositions of the present invention comprise branched-chain amino acids, a plant extract that attenuates NF-?B activity and ?-butyrobetaine, and optionally, ethyl pyruvate or diferuloylmethane.
