PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To operate an engine without largely deteriorating engine performance, even if an EGR cooling water pump pressure-feeding cooling water to an EGR cooler is in failure. SOLUTION: In an EGR device, an engine cooling water pump 4 is disposed to an engine cooling water supply conduit 3 connecting a cooling water outlet 2a of a radiator 2 with an engine 1, and the EGR cooling water pump 13 is disposed to the EGR cooling water passage 12 connecting the cooling water outlet 2a of the radiator 2 with the EGR cooler 11. The EGR device comprises: an emergency cooling water passage 16 connecting the engine cooling water supply conduit 3 between the engine cooling water pump 4 and the engine 1, and the EGR cooling water passage 12 between the EGR cooling water pump 13 and the EGR cooler 11; a valve 17 disposed to the emergency cooling water passage 16; a failure detection means 15 detecting a failure of the EGR cooling water pump 13; and a control means 15 opening the valve 17 when the failure detection means 15 detects the failure of the EGR cooling water pump 13.
