PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To arrange battery plates of a battery plate layered body in a line. SOLUTION: A pick-up/release unit 16 has a central metal hollow body 17 divided into several side-by-side vacuum chambers. Some of these vacuum chambers have a perforated floor, and a vacuum source is connected to these chambers having the perforated floor, and the vacuum source is connected to a second set of chambers at right angle. Battery plates can be picked up from elevators 11 and 12 by use of the intermittent vacuum. Thereafter, the plate can be held against an endless belt 25 having a perforated floor by the constant vacuum until the battery plate reaches the release chamber, and the battery plate can be released by interruption of vacuum.
