PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method which prevent asbestos from scattering, have low cost, and enables the safe treatment of asbestos. SOLUTION: A device, which hardens asbestos precipitated in water to form a stone-like mass, comprises a pipe-like melting furnace (1), a conductive heating coil (2) which is set in the outer circumference of the melting furnace (1) so that it may contact the outer circumference concerned, and a container (5) for cooling which is put under the outlet (4) of the melting furnace (1). A method for hardening asbestos precipitated in water to form a stone-like mass comprises the process of precipitating asbestos in water, the process of feeding the precipitated asbestos from the inlet (3) of the pile-like meting furnace (1) and heated at 1,200-1,500°C by the conductive heating coil (2) to be liquefied, and the process of discharging the liquefied asbestos from the outlet (4) of the pipe-like melting furnace (1) and drops into the container (5) for cooling.
