PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel injector increasing and decreasing a nozzle opening/closing speed by controlling a pressurizing/depressurizing speed of a back pressure control chamber of a nozzle needle. SOLUTION: The injector includes a nozzle control valve (14) for pressurizing or depressurizing the control chamber (38) by controlling a fuel flow into the control chamber (38) through a first passage (50). The nozzle needle (18) allows fuel to flow into the control chamber (38) through a restricted passage (72, 82) as the control chamber (38) is depressurized. The flow of fuel into the control chamber (38) through the restricted passage (72, 82) serves to reduce the speed at which to depressurize the control chamber (38), thereby reducing the speed at which the nozzle needle (18) lifts from a first needle seat (26) to open a nozzle outlet (28).
