<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transflective liquid crystal display device in which retardation layers on the rear surface side can be cut down. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes a pair of substrates 2, 6 and a liquid crystal layer 10 interposed between the substrates and has a reflective area and a transmissive area formed thereon. At least one of the substrates is provided with retardation films 7, 22, 32 whose phase differences differ between the reflective area and the transmissive area, formed thereon.
