PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feeder enabling the detection of skew occurring while media are fed and a method of detecting the skew. SOLUTION: This sheet feeder comprises a feeding means 3 capable of feeding sheet-like media, a plurality of movement amount detection means 71, 72 capable of detecting the movement amount of the media fed by the feeding means 3 at a plurality of positions along the lateral direction of the media, and a skew detection means 54 for detecting the skew of the media according to the movement amount detected by the movement amount detection means 71, 72.
