PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily produce an alkanediol of high purity at a high yield useful as a raw material for a medicine, an agricultural chemical, a liquid crystal and a polymer, and to produce an alkanediol of high optical purity, without decreasing its optical purity in the case of using an optically active substance as a raw material. SOLUTION: Disclosed is a method for producing an alkanediol by reducing an alkanediester by virtue of a metal hydride such as a hydrogenated bis(2-methoxyethoxy)aluminum-sodium and further post-treating the resulting product with an aqueous solution of sodium-potassium tartrate.
