PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dental cutting tool which enables selective discrimination of a hard material and a soft material. SOLUTION: A dental bur (210) has a working surface including cutting elements (220) which deflect or abrade upon encountering material at or above the preselected hardness corresponding to the lower limit of hardness of non-carious dentin. The dental bur (210) is constructed of metal, ceramic, or plastic. The bur (210) is disposed on a fitting member, held in a dental drilling machine, and adapted to be started by the dental drilling machine. The fitting member is removably disposed on the device.
