The transmission includes four planetary gear sets which transmit torque from an input shaft to an output shaft and each having components e.g. sun gear, planet gears, carriers. Five clutches selectively interconnect members of a planetary gear set to corresponding members of another planetary gear set, or to the transmission case, and are engaged in combinations of three to establish at least eight forward speed ratio and at least one reverse speed ratio between the input shaft and the output shaft. Five interconnecting members continuously couple components of one planetary gear set to corresponding component of another planetary gear set.
