According to the invention there is provided a cleaning appliance (10) co mprising a main body (12) and a collecting chamber (100) releasably held on the main body (10). The collecting chamber (100) comprising a closure member (106) which is movable between a closed position and an open position in wh ich the collecting chamber (100) can be emptied. The collecting chamber (100 ) further comprises an actuating member (150) adapted and arranged to releas e the collecting chamber (100) from the main body (12) and, when the collect ing chamber (100) is released from the main body (12), to release the closur e member (106) from the closed position. By providing such an arrangement, a single actuating member (150) can be used to release the collecting chamber (100) from the main body (12) of the cleaning appliance (10) and also to op en the closure member (106) to empty the collecting chamber (100). A single actuating member (150) is less complex, requires less space and is more intu itive for a user to operate.
