<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane-electrode assembly having high methanol utilization factor and capable of operating with high concentration methanol aqueous solution; and to provide a direct methanol fuel cell using the membrane-electrode assembly. <P>SOLUTION: The membrane-electrode assembly for the direct methanol fuel cell is equipped with an aromatic ion exchange resin membrane; a catalyst layer including at least catalyst-supported carbon and an ion exchange resin electrolyte; and a gas diffusion layer. The aromatic ion exchange resin membrane is composed of a polyarylene polymer including a structural unit represented by formula (5) and sulfonic acid unit.
