PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tool position measuring method capable of measuring a position of an edge, even if the edge of a tool is not one point of the tip of a main spindle of a machine tool. SOLUTION: This tool position measuring system has a tool position measuring means for measuring the position of the tool edge 31c based on the fact that a pinion cutter 31 of a gear shaper 10 intercepts a laser optical path 36 of a laser sensor 35, and has a first step of moving until a ridgeline of the pinion cutter 31 reaches the laser optical path 36 while rotating the pinion cutter 31, a second step of moving the pinion cutter 31 by a predetermined distance in the separating direction Y1 from there, a third step of moving the pinion cutter 31 in the approaching direction Z1 until the ridgeline of the pinion cutter 31 reaches the laser optical path 36 again from there, and a fourth step of measuring the position of the tool edge 31c of the pinion cutter 31 based on a position where the ridgeline of the pinion cutter 31 finally reaches the laser optical path 36 as a result of alternately repeating the second step and the third step.
