PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an absolute angle detecting device capable of setting an angle required for initialization and an angle required for failure determination of a detecting element to an angle corresponding to one step of a cyclic gray code. SOLUTION: The absolute angle detecting device detects the absolute angle of a rotation body by storing an N-bit cyclic gray code which is a combination of digits "1" and "0" and collating an N-bit code string output from N-number of detecting elements arranged along a code pattern, with the cyclic gray code. In the cyclic gray code, when N is an even number, the number of digit "1" included in the code string in each step is N/2 or (N+2)/2, and when N is an odd number, the number of digit "1" included in the code string in each step is any one of (N+1)/2, (N-1)/2, (N+1)/2 and (N+3)/2.
