IMAGE ENCODING METHOD AND ITS APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform a region segmentation processing with high precision, and to achieve an image encoding method and its apparatus with high definition and an efficient compression ratio using the processing.

SOLUTION: The image encoding method comprises: a filter processing step for performing a smoothing filter processing with anisotropy with respect to edges of an image on color vector information or brightness information of input image data; a region segmentation step for performing the region segmentation processing with a region growing method on the color vector information or the brightness information after the processing of the filter processing step so as to create multiple pieces of segmented region information of the input image; a layer segmentation step for segmenting the input image into multiple layers using the multiple pieces of the segmented region information created at the region segmentation step; and an encoding step for encoding each layer created at the layer segmentation step.
