PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cosmetic composition, particularly an additive for improving the surfactant balance of haircare products and the polymer quality of the products. SOLUTION: A polymeric esterquat having asymmetric side chains is provided, which is obtained by the following process: A reaction is conducted between an alkanolamine and a mixture of (i) a 6-10C monocarboxylic acid, (ii) a 12-22C monocarboxylic acid and (iii) a dicarboxylic acid, and the resulting ester, optionally after alkoxylated, is quaternarized using an alkylating agent.
