An organic electro luminescent device using a spiro compound is provided to ensure excellent heat resistance, high luminous efficiency and luminescent brightness, to have prolonged life due to the stability of a thin film, and to perform low voltage operation. A material for an organic electro luminescent device is represented by a spiro compound of the chemical formula 1. In the chemical formula 1, S1- S4 are carbon, silicon, germanium, phosphorus or sulfur-atom; O1 - O4 are a ring structure group having a spiro-bond with S1-S4; R1 - R2 are a hydrogen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted C6-C50 aromatic group which is taken in Y1-Y2, a substituted or unsubstituted C5-C50 aromatic heterocyclic group which is taken in Y1-Y2, a substituted or unsubstituted C1-C50 alkyl group which is taken in Y1-Y2, a substituted or unsubstituted C2-C50 alkenyl group which is taken in Y1-Y2, a substituted or unsubstituted C2-C50 alkynyl group which is taken in Y1-Y2, and a substituted or unsubstituted nitrogen, carbon, silicon, germanium or sulfur atom which is taken in Y1-Y2. There is no case where R1 or R2 is altogether the hydrogen atom.
