PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a bisphenol compound, which can produce a bisphenol compound with high conversion rate and high selectivity, to provide a cation-exchange resin catalyst having high activity. SOLUTION: A phenol compound is reacted with a carbonyl compound in the presence of a cation-exchange resin catalyst having a constitutional unit represented by general formula (1) and a compound having a mercapto group or a protected mercapto group, or alternatively in the presence of a cation-exchange resin catalyst having a constitutional unit obtained by modifying a constitutional unit represented by general formula (1) with a compound having a mercapto group or a protected mercapto group.
