The present invention provides IFNalpha2 mutants and active fragments, analogs, derivatives, and variants thereof that have improved specific agonist or antagonist activity as compared to wild-type IFNalpha2. The present invention further provides pharmaceutical compositions comprising IFNalpha2 mutants useful for treating or preventing cancer, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases or disorders associated with increased expression of IFNalpha2.
