The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0888627/IV (b)/1> where n is 1 or 2, X is halogen, and R1, R2, R3 and R4 are hydrogen, halogen, alkyl radicals, aryl radicals or halogen-substituted derivatives of such radicals, at least one of R1, R2, R3 and R4 being other than hydrogen; and their preparation by halogenating, in solution or suspension, a compound of formula <FORM:0888627/IV (b)/2> "Halogen" includes chlorine, bromine, fluorine and/or iodine. Water or organic solvents may be used as the reaction medium. The compounds of the invention are biologically active, and may be used in bleaching compositions and as components of primary battery cathodes (see Groups IV (c), VI and XXXVI).ALSO:Bleaching compositions comprise a carrier and an active amount of a compound of the formula <FORM:0888627/IV (c)/1> where n is 1 or 2, X is halogen, and R1, R2, R3 and R4 are hydrogen, halogen, alkyl radicals, aryl radicals or halogen-substituted derivatives of such radicals, at least one of R1, R2, R3 and R4 being other than hydrogen (see Group IV(b)). The invention also comprises a method of bleaching by contacting the material to be bleached with a solution containing such a composition or a compound of the given formula. Typical bleaching compositions contain 10-35 parts by weight of a chlorinated hydrouracil of the above formula, 0-50 parts by weight of sodium sulphate, 0-25 parts by weight of monobasic sodium phosphate hydrate, 0-75 parts by weight of sodium tripolyphosphate and 0-10 parts by weight of a wetting agent.ALSO:Disinfectant, nematocidal, insecticidal and herbicidal compositions comprise a carrier and a compound of formula <FORM:0888627/VI/1> where n is 1 or 2, X is halogen, and R1, R2, R3 and R4 are hydrogen, halogen, alkyl radicals, aryl radicals, or halogen-substituted derivatives of such radicals, at least one of R1, R2, R3 and R4 being other than hydrogen (see Group IV (b)). The compositions may be solid or liquid, and the normal carriers are specified. Other biologically-active materials may be present, as well as wetting, emulsifying or dispersing agents. |
