The method involves channeling an exhaust gas stream through a channel (5) of a porous ceramic body, where the channel runs in a longitudinal direction of the ceramic body. A voltage is applied to the ceramic body for generating an electrical field in the channel. Unipolar voltage impulses are selected such that a ratio of drift velocity of a sooty particle in a field direction of the electrical field to flow velocity of the gas flow in the channel is greater than or equal to a ratio of twice of a channel height (h) to a channel length.
