Flying shears comprise drums 3, 3a mounted on hollow shafts 2, 2a which are rotated through a first gear train comprising gears 7, 7a, 13a and a gear (19) (Fig. 2, not shown) on shaft 18 flexibly coupled at 17 to a continuously driven motor 16. Blades 6, 6a are carried by holders 5, 5a which are movable from one end position shown through a cutting position to a second end position and back again through the cutting position, by rods 4, 4a on which the holders are mounted, the rods passing through the shafts 2, 2a and being connected at 8, 8a to an eccentric shaft 9. The shaft 9 is rotated to move the rods 4, 4a axially by a second gear train, comprising bevel gears 12 and 12a, and by a gear 13 meshing with gear 13a in the first gear train and is uncoupled from the second gear train by means of a clutch 11 when the rods and blades have left line cutting zone, a brake 15 being instantly applied to the shaft to maintain the blades in the end positions.</p> |
