A thermal barrier coating system (34) includes a substrate (32), a first transition metal layer (36) on the substrate (32), a bond coat (38) on the first transition metal layer (36), a second transition metal layer (40) on the bond coat (38), and an optional ceramic topcoat (42) on the second transition metal layer (40). In embodiments, the first transition metal layer (36) and the second transition metal layer (40) include platinum to resist reaction between the bond coat (38) and the substrate (32) and to slow oxidation of the bond coat (38).
