A method for controlling operation of an engine system such as a diesel engine having a turbocharger 14 preferably a variable geometry turbocharger coupled between an intake manifold 26 and an exhaust manifold 28 of the engine via a turbocharger shaft 40. The method comprises dynamically determining turbocharger shaft speed based at least on intake and exhaust manifold conditions using a torque balance across the turbocharger 14 and adjusting turbocharger boosting to adjust turbocharger shaft speed in response to the dynamically determined turbocharger shaft speed. |
