When the needle 8 has lifted a distance Vh a shoulder on the needle blocks communication between the supply passage 14 and the pistons 18 and the needle achieves full lift Gh when the supply pressure acting on the needle alone has built up sufficiently. On valve closure fuel displaced by the pistons passes through a non-return valve 21. Fuel leakage into the spring chamber is discharged through the bore 23.
