A method of operating an internal combustion engine having at least one adjustable balance shaft (80,82, figs.1,3) includes adjusting operation of the balance shaft(s) during engine operation in response to an engine combustion mode. In one example the balance shaft is disabled during a spark ignition (SI) mode, eg by the use of a switchable pulley, and is enabled during a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI ) mode; alternatively or additionally the phasing of the balance shaft relative to a crankshaft of the engine is varied. The engine may operate in spark-assisted HCCI mode or in a compression-ignition mode that is not necessarily homogeneous. The or each balance shaft may be a secondary harmonic (Lanchester balance beam). |
