Dinuclear or polynuclear complexes of transi - tion metals in which at least one of the metals is different from the other or others are obtained by reacting (1) a transition metal complex having one or more ligands which contain or consist of a halogen atom or atoms with (2) a transition metal complex having one or more ligands which contain or consist of a hydrogen atom or atoms so as to form the dinuclear or polynuclear complex with the elimination of a hydrogen halide, the metals being selected so that at least one metal atom in the product is different from the other or others. The transition metals are defined as being metals of atomic numbers 23 to 28, 41 to 46 and 73 to 78. Halogen ligands specified are chloride, bromide, and iodide and dihydrocarbyl halo-phosphines, -arsines or -stibines and hydrogen ligands may be hydrido ligands or dihydrocarbyl-phosphine, -arsine or -stibine ligands. The complexes may be reacted together in a solvent, e.g. an ether or an aromatic solvent, e.g. tetrahydrofuran or benzene, and the reaction should be conducted in the absence of air, e.g. by using an atmosphere of nitrogen. Examples are given for the production of complexes by reaction of (1) to (4) dimeric chlororhodium dicarbonyl with diphenylphosphine iron tetracarbonyl, diphenylphosphine chromium pentacarbonyl, diphenyl-phosphine molybdenum pentacarbonyl, and diphenyl phosphine tungsten pentacarbonyl respectively, (5) IrCOCl(PPh 3 ) 3 and diphenyl phosphine iron tetracarbonyl, (6) IrHBr 2 CO(PPhEt 2 ) 2 and diphenyl phosphine iron tetracarbonyl and (7) bis(diphenylphosphine dicobalt hexacarbonyl and manganese pentacarbonyl bromide. The complexes are useful as catalysts, e.g. for hydrogenation and polymerization.
