1380426 Gas discharge display panels OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 6 Dec 1971 [7 Dec 1970] 56507/71 Heading H1D An A.C. operable multiple gaseous discharge display and memory panel has an ionizable gaseous medium consisting of He, Ne, Ar, Kr and/or Xe between opposed dielectric charge-storage members having mutually transverse electrode arrays, at least one dielectric member being constituted, incorporating, or in juxtaposition with at least one photoluminescent phosphor excitable by U.V. of 500 to 2500 Š. 25 To 200 torr for 100% Xe and up to 800 torr for Ne-Ar, (e.g. 99À9 : 0À1), and Ne-Ar-Xe are instanced. The phosphor may be solid, liquid, inorganic or organic, and the dielectric member may be luminescent glass or a phosphor may be within or a coating on the dielectric surface. Many phosphors and methods of deposition are disclosed, and the phosphors may be directly exposed to the gas, or be coated with transparent dielectric. The phosphor layer may be 100Š to 10Á or 1mm. thick and photographically deposited in a pattern. Two or more phosphors produce a multi-colour display and one phosphor may excite the other. Adjacent cross-points may be differently coloured or three colour dot systems employed, individual intensity control being by varying the voltage selectively, varying discharge duration, or by use of multilayers of glass and phosphor and addressing various layers independently. Operational gas mechanisms are discussed, panel dimensions given, and frequencies may be 25 to 300 khz for optimum "memory margin", depending on wave shape and pressure. An example includes detailed panel fabrication procedures and has glass panels with Au electrodes covered with glass. Panels with and without physically confining structures for each discharge unit are mentioned, and also particular forms of display. |
