PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of separating a roughening roller on the surface of which an abrasive is arranged from a fixing roller without influencing the surface texture of the fixing roller. SOLUTION: In the image heating device 9 of the image forming apparatus, a fixing part T3 is constituted by bringing a pressure roller 41 into press-contact with the fixing roller 40. Every time fixing of 500 sheets of small-size recording material is performed, a support arm 46 is turned to bring the roughening roller 93 into press-contact with the fixing roller 40 to rub and grind the fixing roller 40. A roughening roller drive transmission gear 49, a roughening roller drive input gear 50 and an idler gear 51 transmit the rotation of the fixing roller 40 to the roughening roller 93, and their meshing is released by the separation of the roughening roller 93. Since the meshing of the roughening roller drive input gear 50 and the idler gear 51 is set to be releasable, the roughening roller 93 is separated from the fixing roller 40 by turning the support arm 46 while keeping the relative rotating state of the fixing roller 40 and the roughening roller 93.
