PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polybenzazole film containing≤50 ppm phosphate group, excellent in surface smoothness and having high heat resistance, high strength and high elasticity. SOLUTION: The polybenzazole film is prepared by heat-treating a polyazomethine film. The polybenzazole film has≤40 nm surface roughness (Ra, arithmetic mean roughness),≥0.80 tensile strength ratio of lengthwise direction over that of cross direction,≥0.80 tensile elasticity ratio of lengthwise direction over that of cross direction. As the film has≤50 ppm phosphate group, it is suitable as a material for electric or electronic parts or a film for magnetic recording. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
