The use of micronized calcium sulfate dihydrate (gypsum) (I) for reducing the incidence of hypocalcemia in milk cows is new. An independent claim is included for a method for reducing the incidence of hypocalcemia in milk cows, involving adding (I) to feed in an amount of 50-500 g per cow per day, during the period from at least 1 week before to up to 4 weeks after calving. ACTIVITY : Antipyretic. MECHANISM OF ACTION : Calcium source; calcium metabolism regulator. Holstein Friesian cows were fed for the 14 days before calving with silage-based feed containing 0.2 kg per day of (I) (100% of particles less than 40 Microm and 50 wt. % less than 7 Microm). The urine parameters were pH 7.54, calcium content 10.68 mmol/l and net acid-base excretion (NSBA) 24 mmol/l from days 14 to 2 ante partum and pH 6.54, calcium content 9.49 mmol/l and NSBA 3 mmol/l from days 2 to 0 ante partum, compared with pH 8.28, calcium content 0.93 mmol/l and NSBA 129 mmol/l from days 42 to 14 ante partum (during which time no (I) was added to the feed).
